We lived in cul de sac in a large detached house with a three quarter of an acre garden which included a stream and a well. A lot of time was spent playing in the garden and also on a green at the front, we used to climb trees, make camps and dens, the dens would be made out of sticks and twigs and anything else we could find, my memories are that most of my play was outside. Because we had such a large garden most of the other children would come and play at my house.
We also played in my house where we had a shed we would play in. We were also allowed to build fires, we had an air rifle which we were allowed to use and would practice shooting targets that we made, something that would not happen now. We had a playroom at the back of our house which was always covered with muck and we once spread putty all over the walls. When not in the garden we would roam around our neighbourhood playing ‘knockout ginger’ (we were very fast at getting away), playing hide and seek in every one’s gardens – we became expert at creeping into our neighbours garden unseen. We also played with bikes and roller skates.
