Makaton Level 1 & 2. 27th January & 3rd February 9.30am – 4.30pm

Makaton is a unique language programme that uses symbols, signs and speech to enable people to communicate. It supports the development of essential communication skills such as attention and listening, comprehension, memory, recall and organisation of language and expression. With Makaton, children and adults can communicate straight away using signs and symbols.

With Makaton, signs are used with speech in spoken word order. Using signs can help people who have no speech or whose speech is unclear. Research has shown that signs and gestures are easier to learn than spoken words. This makes sense. Babies use gestures before they can speak, to tell us what they want. For example, they might point at the biscuit tin or hold out their arms to be lifted up. Children and adults can use Makaton to let others know what they want, make choices, share information and understand more. This helps build and develop important communication and language skills.

Children and adults who have difficulty understanding and speaking often become frustrated or withdrawn. Young children may communicate this through behaviours such as screaming and kicking; older children and adults may shout or hurt themselves. By using Makaton, we are helping them to communicate in a more acceptable way.

Breakfast Clubs Early Adopters Scheme

Breakfast Clubs Early Adopters Scheme

APPLY BY 20 DECEMBER 2024

Schools with primary-school-aged children can apply to become an early adopter of the government’s universal free breakfast clubs scheme. The aim is to support 750 state-funded schools to provide children with access to a breakfast club that involves free food and childcare, starting from April 2025.

If your school is selected as one of the ‘early adopters’ you will need to:

  • deliver breakfast club provision that provides healthy food, compliant with the School Food Standards
  • deliver breakfast club provision that provides at least 30 minutes of free childcare before the start of the school day
  • ensure the club is open to all children of primary-school age on roll at the school
  • provide this club free to parents and carers
  • regularly report data and take part in an evaluation of the scheme as requested

Early adopter schools will receive funding to cover the costs of food, delivery and staffing costs.

Focus of fund/fund aims:

Early adopters of the government breakfast club scheme will be funded to run a breakfast club in their school and will have the opportunity to contribute directly to the design and implementation of the scheme

Application deadline:
20 December 2024

The UK Government is committing £15million to expand the provision of School-Based Nurseries (SBNs) across England. Applications are now open to state-funded primary schools that already offer some early education, such as a reception class.

  • childminders and private, voluntary, and independent nurseries contracted to deliver nursery provision on a school site, or operating on a school’s behalf

The funding can be used for a range of capital measures including:

  • conversion of a building within the school estate
  • renovation, refurbishment and refit of existing school space into nursery provision
  • upgrading or carrying out alterations to essential systems such as heating, plumbing, fire alarms and electrics
  • purchase of equipment
