Lloyds work in partnership with charities and communities that understand the needs and aspirations of people and can make a lasting difference to their lives. They provide flexible, unrestricted funding and additional support to develop to help charities grow stronger and thrive beyond the lifetime of their grant.

Their focus is where our combination of funding and additional support can make the greatest impact on those we partner with. Their programmes aim to give charities the stability and freedom to use the funding as they best see fit.

They have three unrestricted funding programmes and one which is focussed on collaborations seeking to influence locally and regionally. The three unrestricted funding programmes are 1) for small specialist charities supporting people facing complex issues; 2) for small charities working with and led by people experiencing inequity because of their race or ethnicity; and 3) for d/Deaf and Disabled people’s organisations.

The Foundation is keen to support young people who are facing difficult transitions, challenges and barriers to accessing support and opportunities. Particularly young people aged 12-21 who are socially excluded or marginalised; whose experiences can be hidden or less well known; and whose voices are often erased or ignored.

This new programme is aimed at young people who are experiencing or may have already suffered significant issues within their lives. The average grant size is around £5,000-£6,000.

This may, for example, include organisations that focus their work on: young people within the criminal justice system or those at risk of offending; looked after children or care leavers; those with significant mental health concerns or complex needs; young people who have been traumatised by challenging family backgrounds, neglect, violence or abuse; those that have fallen through the gaps in care and/or education; those already affected by, or vulnerable to, exploitation; or whose experiences could seriously impact their transition into adulthood.

Organisations working across a local area such as a village, estate or town, will need to have an income of less than around £100,000. At the other end of the spectrum, if you work across the whole of the UK you will need to have an income of less than around £250,000

The WHSmith Group Charitable Trust

The WHSmith Group Charitable Trust is an independent registered charity (registered charity no. 1013782) that works to support local charities in communities across the UK, and to promote literacy and a love of reading.

The Trust has two principal objectives which focus its activities:

  • To support the local communities in which WHSmith staff and customers live and work; and
    • To support education and lifelong learning, helping people of any age to achieve their educational potential.

Supporting local charities across the UK

We encourage our employees to be actively involved in their local communities and many of our staff fundraise or volunteer their time for charities, community groups and other local good causes. To support and encourage staff involvement, the Trust matches employee fundraising and volunteering. During the Trusts’ 2017 financial year, it made 60 grants as part of the programme, worth over £30,000 in total.

These grants go to match employee fundraising for charities our staff feel passionate about. These include small local charities such as hospices, playgroups, Scout and Brownie packs, as well as big national campaigns such as Save the Children, Help for Heroes, the British Heart Foundation and the National Autistic Society.

The Trust also recognises the time that employees spend volunteering for charities and matches the value of the time they spend. This may be time spent volunteering for a local care centre, for example, or the time many of our employees spend volunteering in local schools. The Trust also makes grants to employees who are members of a school parent-teacher association or Board of Governors.

Promoting a love of reading

The bulk of our grant funding goes towards projects to promote literacy, working in partnership with WHSmith PLC and the National Literacy Trust. Research findings show that children who read for pleasure have significantly better life chances than those who don’t. We are proud that over 50,000 children have taken part in our literacy projects since 2010. Each year, we make donations to hundreds of schools across the UK to enable them to improve their library facilities. In addition, we have been working in partnership with the National Literacy Trust since 2005 delivering projects to promote a love of reading, working in schools where many of the children struggle with their reading.

Applications can be made to your local store.

The Trust aims to award grants to community and small charitable groups within the UK who require musical equipment to actively and positively enhance the lives of their members.

Particular consideration will be given to those groups which represent and help the most disadvantaged and marginalised sectors of society.  This could be through illness, physical or learning disability, poverty or other factors. Applicants will need to provide details of their membership and illustrate how the grant will help their members and positively impact the wider local community.

The trust will look particularly favourably on applications that demonstrate how the grant will be used to promote cross-cultural cohesiveness and break down social barrier within the community.

For a full list of our grant-making criteria and application form please contact us by email. They do not provide grants to individuals.

The Trust’s grant-making focuses on the following areas:

  • Children and young people who are isolated, at risk of exclusion or involved in anti-social behaviour. This covers gang violence and knife crime, education and mentoring as well as projects that work to raise self-esteem and employment opportunities and encourage an active involvement in and contribution towards the local community;
  • Disadvantaged families, this covers parenting support and guidance, mental health, food poverty, refuges and domestic violence projects and would also include projects that benefit travellers, ethnic minorities and refugee families;
  • Prisoners and ex-offenders and specifically projects that maintain and develop contact with prisoner’s families and help with the rehabilitation and resettlement of prisoners and/or ex-offenders after their release.

The Trustees particularly look to fund projects that help families and young people and that are aiming to improve the life chances of the beneficiaries. They like projects that promote community cohesion and the development of skills that will change the outlook and outcomes for the users. Organisations that promote volunteering and involve both past and present users in their operations or management are encouraged. They only consider applications for core costs and are looking for organisations which aim to achieve a positive impact in at least one of the areas above.

As the Trust’s resources are modest, the trustees prefer to fund small to medium-sized charities with an income of less than £200,000 where small grants can have more impact.
