The Trust’s grant-making focuses on the following areas:

  • Children and young people who are isolated, at risk of exclusion or involved in anti-social behaviour. This covers gang violence and knife crime, education and mentoring as well as projects that work to raise self-esteem and employment opportunities and encourage an active involvement in and contribution towards the local community;
  • Disadvantaged families, this covers parenting support and guidance, mental health, food poverty, refuges and domestic violence projects and would also include projects that benefit travellers, ethnic minorities and refugee families;
  • Prisoners and ex-offenders and specifically projects that maintain and develop contact with prisoner’s families and help with the rehabilitation and resettlement of prisoners and/or ex-offenders after their release.

The Trustees particularly look to fund projects that help families and young people and that are aiming to improve the life chances of the beneficiaries. They like projects that promote community cohesion and the development of skills that will change the outlook and outcomes for the users. Organisations that promote volunteering and involve both past and present users in their operations or management are encouraged. They only consider applications for core costs and are looking for organisations which aim to achieve a positive impact in at least one of the areas above.

As the Trust’s resources are modest, the trustees prefer to fund small to medium-sized charities with an income of less than £200,000 where small grants can have more impact.

We provide practical support that makes an immediate difference to disabled and disadvantaged youngsters, allowing them to live their best lives and reach their full potential.

Support for children – We award grants to support children and young people under the age of 19 who have a recognised disability or long-term health condition. They can provide specialist equipment grants for items such as – hoists, beds, car seats, sensory and play equipment, assistive and medical technologies. They also fund specialist wheelchairs for children.

Support for organisations – We also support schools, youth clubs, sports clubs, hospitals, hospices and other non-profit organisations working with children and young people. They provide services such as:
Sunshine Coaches – Variety’s famous Sunshine Coaches are specially adapted, accessible minibuses that cater for SEND schools and other non-profit organisations working with disabled and disadvantaged children and young people.
Variety Great Days Out – Our day trips offer memorable experiences for children and young people who may otherwise not have the chance to go on a special outing.

Organisation grants – In the past, Variety has offered equipment grants to organisations supporting disadvantaged young people through informal education, positive activity, and skills development. We are not currently open for applications, but, are hoping to review this situation soon.

Only registered charities in the U.K. whose primary objectives are to assist one or more of the following groups:

  • Disadvantaged/underprivileged young people (under 25 years of age)
  • People with disabilities (physical or learning disabilities) or mental health problems
  • Older people (aged over 60)

They do not respond to organisations who do not meet the above criteria.

 Large grants – one off payments for capital expenditure of approximately £2,000 and over (the majority of grants fall within the range of £2,000 to £5,000). Preference is given to specific items of furniture and equipment (excluding office items) which the Charity can fund in their entirety.

Please bear in mind that the Trustees prefer to use the Charity’s funding to complete projects in order to maximise effectiveness and ensure grants are taken up as quickly as possible. This means that minibuses, building and refurbishment works are only considered in the final stage of the fundraising appeal. Please apply once you have a shortfall of £15,000 or less.

When to apply: Applications may be submitted at any time and will be considered at the next appropriate Board meeting. Applications for Small Grants of up to £750 are considered monthly.

How to apply: Please visit the website at: http://www.percy-bilton-charity.org/
